Man arrested after using free Wi-Fi service
June 22, 2006 on 10:02 am | In scary | 5 CommentsAlexander Eric Smith sat in his truck for hours at a time each day, for the past 3 months, and used the free Internet wireless access of his local coffee shop. Smith never made a single purchase, and he was warned against using the Wi-Fi access by the manager of Brewed Awakenings.
“He doesn’t buy anything,” Manager Emily Pranger says about the man she ended up calling 911 about. “It’s not right for him to come and use it.”
Smith was arrested by the authorities for theft of service after the manager called 9-1-1.
Now, while I can understand the frustration of the manger at Brewed Awakenings, I really can’t justify calling 911 to have someone arrested for using your free Wi-Fi, unless he was somehow disrupting the service. If you want to restrict people from using your service, it’s probably not a good idea to offer unsecured Wi-Fi access, and advertise it.
Unfortunately for this guy, it seems that the police had asked him to stop using the coffee shop’s internet access previously, after the manager had complained.

The nightmare of cancelling AOL
June 13, 2006 on 5:16 pm | In aol, scary | 109 CommentsSometimes we pay for a service which we no longer use simply because we haven’t had the time, or energy to cancel it. Here is a recording of a phone call made by an AOL user trying to cancel his AOL account, which he was no longer using.
Listening to this recording will actually make you angry. It’s so ridiculous that I am doubting the authenticity of this call.

UPDATE: The site seems to be down due to the Digg Effect. Try listening to it through Odeo instead:
UPDATE: The AOL Rep on the phone call has been fired!
Drop an F-Bomb over the airwaves, get fined $325,000.
June 7, 2006 on 11:41 pm | In scary | 1 CommentSince there isn’t much going on, the Federal Government is focusing on stopping potty mouthed on air personalities from cursing on the radio and TV. The new fine, for uttering the word “fuck” on-air, is going to be increased to $325,000 from the current maximum penalty of $32,500 per violation.
The U.S. Congress on Wednesday sent President George W. Bush a bill to boost fines tenfold to $325,000 on broadcast television and radio stations that violate decency standards, a victory for conservative groups.
The legislation, which Bush is expected to sign, caps fines at $3 million for continuing violations. The House approved it by a 379 to 35 vote on Wednesday, while the Senate passed the measure by unanimous consent last month.

Your email is not private at work
June 2, 2006 on 5:49 pm | In scary | No CommentsA new study found that more than thirty percent of big companies who employ 1,000 people or more in the United States and Britain, are hiring people to read and analyze outbound employee email. The same companies stated that their business was hurt by the exposure of sensitive or embarrassing information in the past.
In the United States, forty-four percent of companies with 20,000 employees or more said that they snoop on worker e-mails.
“What folks are concerned about is confidential or sensitive information that is going out,” said Gary Steele, chief executive of Cupertino, California, company Proofpoint, which conducted the study along with Forrester Research.
Also in the US, about a third of the companies surveyed, estimated that 20 percent of outgoing e-mails contain content that poses a legal, financial or regulatory risk, and also said that they had fired at least one employee in the past year for violating email policies.
Hard Drive sold at a flea market instead of being destroyed
June 1, 2006 on 2:25 pm | In scary | 1 CommentAfter bringing his computer in for an upgrade at his local Best Buy, Henry Gerbus was assured that the old hard drive would be destroyed.
“They said rest assured. They drill holes in it so it’s useless”
But Henry and his wife had a good reason to worry, as a few months later they got a phone call from a man in Chicago.
“He said, ‘My name is Ed. I just bought your hard drive for $25 at a flea market in Chicago,’” said Gerbus. “I thought my world was coming down.”
Through the information left on the hard drive, the man was able to contact Henry. Since personal and sensitive information, such as social security numbers where also left on the hard drive, as a precaution, the couple alerted all the major credit bureaus of the incident, to protect themselves from identity theft.
Best Buy issued the following statement.
“Our company values and places the utmost importance on maintaining the privacy of our customers. We will fully investigate these allegations.”

Parking space now available for sale in London
May 8, 2006 on 5:21 pm | In funny, interesting, scary | 1 CommentA truly wonderful and very well proportioned single parking space offering a sought-after location with a very hard base, superior tarmac-mix and easy access onto and off via the space surrounding it. The space comprises approximately 60% asphalt, 20% concrete and 20% local stone providing a high quality and very hard layer to park your car. The space is situated beside other spaces in a parking area with Hyde Park and Knightsbridge very close by.
You get all this for the low price of £80,000(~$100,000 USD). What’s stunning, is not only the price for a single parking spot, but the detail of what the ground consists of. I mean, if that 20% of local stone wasn’t there, then this would be an outrageous asking price!
