3 Red Lights of Death - The bricked XBox 360
April 24, 2007 on 2:08 am | In 3 red lights, 360, bricked, microsoft, xbox |It amazes me what companies can get away with these days. My XBOX 360 finally broke after 1.5 years. Now normally I wouldn’t be this upset about it, I’ve had electronics break before - sometimes they’ve just had enough.
Here’s my problem with this issue. Microsoft knows that there is a problem with the first Gen. XBOX 360s. They know this because nearly all the repairs they’ve had to do were for the same issue. Of course I am talking about the 3 red lights of death. It’s a problem that occurs so often, that Microsoft had to change their warranty from 90 days to 1 year.
So now my XBOX 360 is 1 1/2 years old and it has been bricked by the evil red lights. Microsoft knows the problem is theirs with the hardware, but since it’s past the first year I am going to get screwed out of $100. Sure they are now nice enough to cover shipping, where as before they’d make the consumer pay for shipping back the broken product, which Microsoft put out on the market in the first place.
Hey Microsoft - why don’t you just take care of all the fist Gen. 360s that have the same hardware issue. Why screw people that were lucky (or unlucky in my case) enough to not have this problem occur before the first year past.
Coincidentally enough, my 360 broke just in-time for the Elite.

Just a little update. I have the same problem same time frame. Sure they are nice enough to pay the shipping because they raised the price from one hundred to one hundred and forty dollars. Extra hundred and forty dollar mandatory yearly maintenance. Also it would be nice to talk to someone in this country. Maybe someone that actually has a 360. Maybe a Major Nelson that can talk to the customers. Greg

I bought an extended warranty for my machine, so if anything happens in the first three years, it’ll be covered. As it happens, mine’s had to go back for fixes twice in the first six months. Anyone who buys a microsoft product ought to consider extending the warranty as much as they can, because history has shown repeatedly that one can’t trust the QA for MS hardware/software

i was playing phantasy star when it froze. turned it off and on and 3 red lights. This is my 3rd xbox and i just called microsoft.I know the phrases to use on max to get an agent on the phone fast and when she got on i told her i had the ring o death. she started to wlak me through the troubleshotting but i quickly told her i was becoming an expert on this subject and had already tried.this xbox i was useing was a brand new one sent a month earlier from repairs.she then told me my warranty was up and it would cost 140$ to fix. i said “how do you know it will cost 140$?” she said that was the flat rate.i then said,”well,… i’m not paying it” …. after a moment of silence she started to give me a reference number in case i changend my mind and wanted to “play” again. i then said, “how many times will it take for you guys to send me an xbox that works longer than 6 months? i’m on my 3rd xbox and when i send this one in, it will be my fourth. all the same issue. 3 red lights. all brand new systems.i then said “if i get a brand new system back from you guys, shouldn’t it start the warranty over?” there was a moment of silence… she then said “no ajfjkahf” (this is because i couldnt understand her) but what i could finally make out afer i had her repeat it 3 times is that microsoft gives a 3 month warranty if you get a new system from them.oooooookkkkkkkkk so then i had to look up my last order number and give it to her. then she went away for 5 minutes came back saying,”ok sir you do fall under the 3 month warranty and we will fix it free of charge.” wtf. she tried to charge me 140 dollars then tells me its free. she couldnt see that i had only had it a month??!!! wow microsoft is reall bangin up the bucks with this system. also the headsets suck because the wire twists around so often and so much sometimes that t makes a short in the line to where you can’t hear ppl through it but they can hear you. i have almost been through as many headsets as i have xbox’s.just letting you guys know before you get scammed out your hard earned money.o and also if you have a 360 and you dont have a warranty

Guy,
You can forget about sending the Xbox back to Microsoft and wait for 4 weeks to get a refurbish set back.
You can fix it yourself now and get your xbox back in an hour just like me.

I just called for the box that they send you to ship it into Microsoft to have it fixed. Died in the middle of loading Bioshock for the first time. Come on!!!!!

my 360 dvd drive can not open and i saw three red light .I also found the error code 02 what’s the
problem -
Oh! how nice they don’t say anything about the problem.just say hardware fail. i think we just
forget about 360 and think about ps3 and wii -
i think i found a (so far) permanent solution to the 3 red lights,. a couple of weeks ago, my 360 suffered from the RoL so i did wat every 1 with a voided or expiered warranty would do, i opened it, and after reading about it, i gathered that the hardware failure was doing to the soilder metling when it heats up then releasing the GPU or CPU from the board becuz of the x-clamps..but in my finidings i learn that its no the clamps… its the black screws that screw the mother board down to the casing , so basically i added more thermal paste to the gpu and cpu, didnt replace the black screws and left it un tighted cuz the screws pull the mother board down towards the casing,,…suprisingly enuff, it hasnt stop workin since i fixed it…even left it on for about 8 hours on accident while i went to work, came home, still good as new…(aside from the fact i cant stand it up it must be layed flat) but eh, it beats paying 160 for a replacement that is jsut gonna break on u

I had the dreded 3 red lights come on a couple of weeks ago. I did a bit of research and found this book.
It was an easy guide on how to fix it along with a bunch of other problems that you can run into. Luckly the three lights were the first and last problems i had with it.
If you think you have the know how check it out. beats paying someone to fix it or buying a new one.Comment by mbobeck01 — May 8, 2008 #
