Apple software update kills MacBook [Update]

[Update: Problem solved - Read solution at the bottom of the article]

Apple recently released an update for airport. The update is called “AirPort Update 2006-001” I decided to install it tonight on my 2.0GHz MacBook, when the auto updater popped up. After installation it asked to reboot.

I rebooted, but the system never came back up. Instead of the wonderful OS X desktop, all I saw was a white blank screen at first. It looked strange, and the longer I looked at it, I noticed that different colored vertical lines were starting to appear. After about a minute or so, there were hundreds of lines going down the screen.

I forced a shutdown by holding the power button, and booted up again. Same thing. Shit! So, knowing that the next step would be to reset the PRAM, I did just that. No luck.

MacBook users beware! The AIRPORT UPDATE 2006-001 could potentially kill your computer! Can anyone confirm if this has happened to anyone else?

Here are the screenshots

Ouch

Ouch!

Update:

I called Apple this morning, and they were able to help me even without the extended AppleCare. They had me reset the MacBook’s PMU, which fixed the problem. The Apple tech said that this is a problem that Apple is now fully aware of. It’s been happening to people when they are rebooting or shutting down after updates, or even just completely randomly. It is a problem with the screen resolution, and currently, resetting the PMU is the only solution.

Here is the Apple article on resetting the MacBook PMU.

I’m sad about the macbooks. I hope the newer revs are more stable.

  5. [...] A report on iBloggedThis illustrates a complaint we have seen several times regarding updates. Apparently some users are experiencing system failure combined with unusual vertical lines after installing the latest AirPort Update. According to iBloggedThis, a solution is rather simple: I called Apple this morning… They had me reset the MacBook’s PMU, which fixed the problem. The Apple tech said that this is a problem that Apple is now fully aware of. It’s been happening to people when they are rebooting or shutting down after updates, or even just completely randomly. 6. This is an issue with the firmware upgrade and the update for 10.4.7 that came out a few weeks ago, it kept happening to me over and over, but when i changed resolution down to a non native resolution and back up to the max, it fixed it for good, 10.4.8 will fix this issue.

  7. I had this same issue. I figured out the pmu reset thing through the website. I did not know it was the update that did it. I was aobut to throw it across the room.. since i have gone through the macbook shutdown issue and then the palm rests and then inverter board went and my battery with it.. yeah i have had a wonderful experience so far..

  8. Big deal, this is easy to fix.

This has been documented on the mac discussion forum. I had this problem when I got the fan update to my black macbook. Very easy to fix, the problam happens after a NVRAM reset, like when updating the bios. All you have to do after reseting the PMU is go into OSX and change the resolution twice. this will help th macbook detect the proper resolution and it will never return.

I did notice after the bios update my OSX is sluggish, I reset the NVRAM and it fixed the problem as well.

  10. I have been experiencing the same problem as well ever since I used a monitor cleaning solution purchased at an Apple retail store.

I had just gotten my BlackBook back from the same Apple Store Repair from being checked out after a recent flight in which the computer would not turn on or stay on long (the problem did not first occur until the return flight home).

When I started using the computer shortly thereafter, I noticed that I had a vertical band of “very pretty colors” on the right hand margin of the BlackBook’s monitor.

Since I read about the same double-rebooting process with the initial problem, I used the same technique of having the computer start up twice while holding the command+alt+R+P+Power keys all at once.

I initially wondered if the problem occurred when the MacBook was slightly jarred or when I tried to use it at an altitude that was too high during the return flight home.

But it is indeed annoying after awhile:(

I have using the same technique to successfully get rid of the problem everytime it occurs.

  11. i just updated with no problem whatsoever. Thanks for your article, though, because I had no idea how to reset the PRAM. I printed directions before updating. :P

  13. I had this same thing happen to me after an update on my old iBook. Unfortunately my warranty was up so I never thought of calling Apple. I did Google for it and came up with some ways to do the PMU update, but none of them worked. I was fortunately able to sell it on Ebay, dead, for $500 – Apples really do hold their value! I’m still ticked I lost the iBook from just an update though.

  16. [...] Come across this on digg. Aparently this could happen if you install the Airport update. So far I have no problem after the install. But if you do – do a PMU reset. Hopefully I don't have to use this as a future reference. [...]

  17. This sucks for us MAC users casue now every single time someone experiences anything less than perfection with their MAC they are going to scream bloody murder as evidenced by your blog that screams the problem and whispers the solution.
Next time wait for the problem to be solved before posting, or post if there is no solution.
    Thank you,
    A fellow mac user

  20. I had the same problem, It happened five days ago. It first started with the unable to find the hard drive (flashing folder with the question mark) and then turned into the vertical colorful lines. It sucks, I lost all my data on my hard drive, even though I back up regularly I haven’t done so in about a month. BTW, mine did not get fixed with the simple PMU reseting.

  24. this happened to me too….WELL before the airport update. i just think you had some really good timing. apple repaired the machine almost a month ago and there hasn’t been ANY problems at all. i love my macbook. it’s really a good deal. other than pro care, i think it’s the best deal apple has going.

my advice, call applecare or bring it to a store.

    good luck.

  27. Hate to tell you this, but you may be experiencing the beginning of random macbooks shutdowns. Send your macbook into AppleCare for repair immediately.

  28. I had the same problem. The day that I started having the problem, I took the MacBook in for repair. Seven days later, the Apple still has my MacBook and support status is indicating that its in repair.

I’d recommend taking your MacBook in for repair ASAP.

Additionally, on Sep 01, 06, I had taken my MacBook in for repairs because the display was flicking like a strobe light. I’m not sure if this was or is part of the same problem.
