Girl sues MySpace for $30 million

June 19, 2006 on 10:30 pm | In myspace | 5 Comments

A 14-year old girl is suing MySpace for 30 million dollars, claiming that MySpace has “absolutely no meaningful protections or security measures to protect underage users.” The lawsuit came after the girl was sexually assaulted by another user of MySpace.com.

The girl claims that a 19-year-old man lied in his profile about being a senior on a football team to gain her trust and phone number.

In a statement, MySpace said it is committed to the safety of its members.

“We take aggressive measures to protect our members,” said Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer. “Ultimately, Internet safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone on the Internet to engage in smart Web practices and have open family dialogue about how to apply offline lessons in the online world.”

Alright.. It sucks that shit like this happens, but when are the parents going to start taking some responsibility about what their kids do? Why is a 14 year old allowed to go meet people off the net, unsupervised?

Can MySpace be more secure? Possibly. Will that stop things like this from happening? Probably not.

  1. At least now she doesn’t have to become a hooker for a few years until she’s wasted that potential $30 mil on drugs and booze.

  2. How about, like, suing the GORRAM SHITHEAD RAPIST instead of the Web site?

It wasn’t the Web site who gave her phone number away. She did that.

It wasn’t the Web site who sexually assaulted her. The GORRAM SHITHEAD RAPIST did that.

The rapist is responsible for the harm caused by his actions. MySpace is NOT.

  3. I hate when parents don’t take responsibility for thier kids. It’s not hard at all to install filtering programs like NetNanny or Cybersitter, which can keep kids off certain sites and chat programs. People think those programs are for younger kids. They also come in handy with teenagers.

  4. Oh, and also, kids should be online when a parent is present. The filtering programs are good only for when the parent is not present. :)
