Comcast and Tivo

Comcast is about to begin beta testing the HD TIVO service on their DVR boxes this month, according to the AVS Forum. The deal between comcast and Tivo was inked back in mid March of 2005.

The TIVO software will be downloaded directly onto existing Comcast HD DVR boxes, without the need to purchase or rent any extra hardware.

Under the terms of the agreement, Comcast and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo service that will be made available on Comcast’s current primary DVR platform. New software will be developed by TiVo and will be incorporated into Comcast’s existing network platforms. The new service will be marketed with the TiVo brand, and is expected to be available on Comcast’s DVR products in a majority of Comcast markets in mid-to-late 2006.

Although no official statements has been issued yet about the pricing and availability, we expect the pricing for the new service to be at about $5 per month, on top of the current DVR charges. The new Comcast/TIVO DVR service will include the popular TIVO user interface, and features such as the Season Pass and the WishList.

No word yet on which markets Comcast will test the new TIVO service on, or how to sign up. Comcast support was unable to provide us with any useful information when we called.

  1. Tivo will be launched tennative first quarter 2007, and will be approx 2.00 per month to add (as of 8/06). with this tivo comcast will launch a new guide, similiar to Picture in Picture you will browse 4 “live” screens at a time / filtered by genre and time. Also with the new dvr subscribers with home networking will be able to download recorded shows to handheld devices, like palms and even to in car players to watch on the road. with the IPnetwrok you can even view your dvr recordings on your pc…As if this wasnt cool enough theyve even made it possible with sprint/nextel to program your dvr away from home…. and yes they will sign a wireless deal with sprint to make cellphones available through comcast sometime in 2008.

  2. The installation of TiVo software into digital video recorders already in the homes of Comcast subscribers has fallen more than a year behind its original schedule.

When Comcast and TiVo first announced plans in March 2005 to place TiVo’s digital video recorder software in existing Motorola boxes in customers’ homes, the companies said the deployment would be achieved “in a majority of Comcast markets in mid-to-late 2006.”

That has not been the case. Only this month — the last of 2006 — has Comcast begun testing TiVo software on Motorola boxes in a “handful” of employee homes in Denver, said Mark Hess, Comcast senior vice president of business and product development.
